A compassionate society does not judge those who need support. No one truly knows the path another person has walked, the challenges they have faced, or the circumstances that have brought them to ask for help. Welfare should always be delivered with dignity, empathy and respect, recognising that anyone can experience illness, redundancy, disability or personal hardship.
At the same time, compassion should be matched with opportunity and responsibility. We believe no one should be written off simply because they are unemployed, disadvantaged or face additional challenges. Across the world we see inspiring examples of people overcoming barriers—from businesses creating meaningful employment for neurodivergent people, to individuals with disabilities building successful careers, to the extraordinary determination demonstrated by competitors in the Paralympic and Invictus Games. These examples remind us that ability is often greater than society expects when people are given the right support and opportunities.
Policy Seed believes welfare should provide security when it is needed, while helping every person who is able to develop skills, contribute to their community and move towards greater independence. Those who cannot work should always receive the support they need. Those who can contribute should be encouraged and empowered to do so, because participation benefits both the individual and society.
We also believe the welfare system must be fair to the people who fund it. Working individuals and businesses make a significant contribution through their taxes, and the system should ensure that everyone who is capable of contributing does so in a way that reflects their abilities and circumstances. Welfare should be a partnership between citizens, communities and the state—one built on compassion, responsibility and the belief that every person has value and something to contribute.
